Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience
in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first
Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session
is up to 1 hour in length.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course is geared toward veterinarians
and veterinary technicians interested in transfusion medicine. Participants in this course should be well versed in
basic canine and feline anatomy and physiology.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
Course Description:
Blood transfusion is an integral part of medicine, but it is not a totally benign intervention.
Many patients receive the wrong type of blood product, or receive blood products when they are not indicated.
Conversely, there are many patients who would benefit from the administration of a particular blood product
who do not receive them.
There are many options for blood product administration, and new products are coming on the market continually.
This course will give you the tools needed to match a patient with the proper component, introduce you
to blood typing, cross-matching and product administration and discuss management of adverse reactions
to blood products.
Fundamentals of donor selection and best blood banking practices will also be covered.
This course consists of two (2) 2-hour Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- Discuss blood products and components
- Learn and become familiar with blood typing and cross-matching
- Discuss practical transfusion administration and transfusion reactions
Course Materials: Course materials will be available
in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required textbooks: There is no required textbook for this course.
About the Instructors:
Dr. Tony Johnson is a 1996 Washington State University grad and
obtained board certification in the specialty of emergency medicine and critical care in 2003.
He is currently a clinical assistant professor at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine
and a consultant and editor for the Veterinary Information Network.
He has lectured for several international veterinary conferences and is an active blogger and writer.
He used to live in a converted one-room schoolhouse in the middle of a cornfield,
but has since taken up occupancy in a normal house in a normal neighborhood with very little corn.
He has 2 young sons and a beautiful wife named Gretchen, who is also a veterinary emergency and
critical care specialist and VIN consultant.
Dr. Steven Bailey began his career in emergency practice, but transitioned
to Feline medicine in 1992.
He earned his DVM from Michigan State in 1986, and (at the age of 50) in 2011 he was awarded
ABVP Diplomate status in Feline medicine (you're never too old).
His special interests include complicated med/surg cases, as well as critical care, and dentistry.
In addition to being a VIN consultant in the Feline Folder, Dr. Bailey is an active member of the
AAFP, ABVP, AVMA, and MVMA. He is a currently VP for the regions SEMVMA and sits on the board of the MVMA.
In his free time, Dr. Bailey is an open water sea kayak instructor and misbegotten triathlete.
Dr. Bob Vasilopulos DVM, MS, DACVIM (SAIM) graduated from the University Of Illinois
College Of Veterinary Medicine in 1994.
He practiced emergency medicine in the Chicago area for 7 years before starting an internal medicine
residency at Mississippi State University.
During his residency he received a Masters Degree in Veterinary Medicine.
After completing his residency and becoming board certified in small animal internal medicine in 2004
he moved to Tucson to join Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson as head of the internal medicine department
and director of the internship program and blood banking program.
Dr. Christopher Byers received his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences
from Colorado State University in 1999, and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from
Cornell University in 2003.
He completed residencies in emergency/critical care and small animal internal medicine,
and is board-certified by both the ACVECC and ACVIM.
He is currently faculty at MidWest Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska,
a private practice affiliate of the Kansas State University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.
His main areas of interest are clinical immunology and hematology, and during his time away from the hospital,
he enjoys ballroom dancing, fine dining and world travel.
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session November 7):
Blood products, typing and transfusion reactions
Content:
- Blood products and components - what is in each type of blood product;
- Blood typing and cross-matching - general concepts, species differences, available products;
- Practical transfusion administration - how to give each product, differences
between cats and dogs when giving; and
- Transfusion reactions - how to recognize, how to treat.
Potential adverse effects of blood transfusion and reasons to not give blood
in certain cases will also be discussed.
Week 2 (Real Time Session November 14):
House donors and Case Studies
Content:
- Considerations for in house donors - typing, testing,
- practical in house collection - specifics for cat versus dog donors
- Case studies - when do I use what product or disease scenarios and when to pick which product

This course is open to VIN members and VSPN members only.
Non-members and veterinary students are not eligible to enroll in this course.
*To ensure participants are ready and prepared for classes, enrollment will close when
the maximum number of participants is reached or at 5pm ET the day of the first
Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a
weekend, course enrollment will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.
